Location: Schwitzer Student Center, Suite 210 (second floor)
Hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 1:00-4:00 p.m. (last patient taken at 4:00); Friday 12:30-3:30 p.m.
The Student Health Center (SHC) is on the second floor of Schwitzer Center in Suite 210. We have two full time nurse practitioners and work in a beautiful facility in which we share space with the psychologists of the Counseling Center. The staff works together, under the direction of two family physicians, to provide students with confidential and congruent care.
The Student Health Record must be complete and on file by the start of school by: all full time students, anyone living in campus housing and all clinical students. This record gives the nurse practitioners permission to assess the student for illnesses, injuries, emergencies, and medical consultations. Please note that if the Student Health Record is not turned in or completed by the end of September, a hold will be placed on the student's registration for the following semester/session.
The Student Health Center provides limited medical services, so we may have to refer your student elsewhere. That is when your student will need to have their insurance card with them. The nurse practitioners will see all students but may need to refer a few students to our physician (who will see a few students one morning a week).
If students must be referred to a physician's/specialist's office, or to laboratory or radiology services, the student will need to arrange transportation and take his/her health insurance information. Students are encouraged to call home to make sure of insurance coverage, and to have a choice of seeing their own physician before testing is arranged through the Student Health Center.
In case of serious illness or accident, students may be referred for treatment to the closest emergency room or a "prompt care" type facility; again the student will need to take insurance information. Students should follow up with the SHC after these visits. Any extraordinary treatments, medicines, or therapies that a resident student may need must be approved through the Student Health Center (including athletes).
Two nurse practitioners are on duty Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m., on a walk-in basis (last patient taken at 4:00). The SHC is open these hours when classes are in session. The nurse practitioners can be reached after hours and weekends for emergencies through the Residence Directors, the Resident Assistants, or Campus Police.
The Student Health Center is a fee-for-service office. This means that while the visits are free for students, nominal fees are charged for routine immunizations, medications, testing and treatments. Payment is expected at the time of service, so students need to come in prepared to pay.
The Student Health Center does not file insurance forms, but gives a receipt which can be used for this purpose. Most charges are listed in the waiting room. The SHC accepts checks, cash and credit/debit cards. If fees are not paid within 10 days of service, we will email the student and let them know they have a hold on their transcripts until paid. The usual fee for a simple illness runs around $15.00; vaccines are more.
More Information about vaccinations
Allergy shots can be given in the SHC as long as the student has sent/brought in their allergy serum vial along with instructions from their allergist. The serum will be kept in the SHC. There is a charge for each injection ($5.00). Remind the student they will need to wait 20-30 minutes afterwards to check for any reactions.
Please encourage any sick or injured student to visit the Student Health Center right away for assistance. Although we do not provide "absence notes", we will contact professors when an extended period of school will be missed (one week or more).
Students are expected to be in contact with their professors about absences and medical appointments and may need to show office receipts to verify absences. If a student implies a visit was made to the Student Health Center, professors may call and verify if the student has been seen and the date; no other information can be given without the student's permission. All visits and records in the Student Health Center are protected by professional standards of confidentiality.
